How to Measure a Room for Carpet: A Simple UK Guide

Measuring a room for a new carpet is easier when you know which measurements matter. This guide explains how to work out the carpet size you may need, why carpet roll width makes a difference, and how to avoid ordering too little.

1. Measure the room at its widest points

Measure the full length and width of the floor in metres, including into door recesses, bay windows or alcoves that you want carpeted. Don't simply rely on the dimensions shown on an estate agent's floor plan. Check the actual room, and measure in more than one place if the walls aren't perfectly straight.

2. Add a fitting allowance

Allow extra material beyond the finished floor dimensions for trimming and fitting. Around 10 cm added to each overall room dimension can be a useful starting allowance for a straightforward room, but unusual shapes, uneven walls, patterns and joins may require more. A professional fitter should confirm your cutting measurements before you order.

3. Check the carpet roll width

Carpets are commonly sold in fixed roll widths such as 4 m and 5 m. The area of your floor and the area of carpet you must buy may therefore be different.

Example: a room measuring 3 m × 4 m

The floor area is 12 m². However, if the carpet is supplied in a 4 m-wide roll and you need a 4.1 m cutting length after fitting allowance, the purchase would be 4 m × 4.1 m = 16.4 m², assuming the carpet can be laid in that orientation. If the room's true width plus allowance exceeds 4 m, a 4 m-wide roll may not fit in one piece. You may need to rotate the layout, use a wider roll, or plan a join.

Carpet pile direction, patterns, joins and room shape can affect the best cutting layout, so avoid assuming that simply dividing the floor area by roll width gives a safe order quantity.

4. Measure L-shaped rooms and recesses separately

Draw a rough plan and record every wall length, doorway and recess. For L-shaped rooms, think about the full rectangle of carpet needed and where any offcuts might be used. A joined layout may reduce waste in some rooms, but joints should be planned carefully and checked for suitability.

5. Use Cozy Flooring's room measuring guide

If you have your own dimensions, you can start with Cozy's room size calculator and measurement page. You can also explore our carpet collection to see different styles and prices. Always check the specific product's available roll widths and the final calculated order size before paying.
